1971 was a difficult year for BS. Almost the entire soprano line, drum line, and color guard left after the great 1970 season. As the season approached it was clear that the corps could no longer sustain its all male membership, so a female color guard was added. The soprano and drum lines remained small, with just a few veterans remaining.
It was a pivotal year for drum corps in general, as events would lead up to the formation of the DCI the following year, with BS as a founding member. BS was nonetheless innovative in 1971 with its "total show," The King and I.
