BS won its 11th and last Dream in 1970.
The significance of the 1970 CYO Nationals- "There were countless moments of solidarity and sacrifice. In 1970, the Corps was told it could not go to the VFW Nationals in Miami unless it placed 1st or 2nd in the CYO Nationals in Boston. The prize money was needed desperately. B.S. finished third that night. But in the parking lot outside of Newton, Mass., everyone began digging into their pockets. Fourteen-year-olds threw in a dollar, others gave five dollars. Instructors Dick Burns, Jack Boyko and others endorsed their Corps paychecks and handed them back. The staff and the Quartermasters emptied their wallets. An overwhelmed Father Stulb finally succumbed. "Okay, get on the buses," he said. 'It's on to Miami.' " - from Tim O'Brien's A (not so brief) HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
So it was on to Miami, where the corps won the prelims at the VFW Nationals, however it was contested because other corps got caught in the rain. As I recall, the Cavaliers were allowed to repeat their preliminary performance under more favorable conditions and ultimately won the prelims. But who cares...neither the Golden Knights nor the Cavaliers came home with the title. The true significance, however, is that the 1970 GKs had an early season streak of losses to many of the corps on the bottom of the heap. True to form, BS was indeed a national contender when it counted.
Then it was on to the Manning Bowl in Massachusetts for the World Open. Once again, we won the prelims, only to be bested by the Troopers in the finals. But all of us who marched in 1970 recall this show as probably our best ever. We took the trophy for high horns, having only lost 0.3 in the entire show. We also earned the high drum trophy.
