1969 was a good year, adding another Dream title, two NJ State Championships, a win at the AL National prelims & third in the finals, and a fifth in the VFW Nationals.
"...[and then there was] the disastrous attempt to feed the entire corps with buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Bordentown in '69 when the mosquitoes got more chicken than the corps." - from Tim O'Brien's A (not so brief) HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
I recall the VFW finals...we entered the field along with some very bizarre weather. A stiff, cool wind prevailed through the show - to the extent that it was difficult for us to hear one another. This is one of the few August shows that I can ever remember shivering during retreat. The Fleetwood recording of our show is terrible: You mostly hear the wind whisling past the microphones.
Another memory that exemplifies the Golden Knights relates to exiting the stadium after the VFW performance. Because of the sudden weather change, one of the sopranos had an asthma attack during the show...but nobody noticed. Why? Because he maintained composure until we were off the field and shielded from the crowd - at which time he all but collapsed.
I might also add that the late Joe Shepise was crowned "National Ugly Champion" at the AL Nationals. Does everyone remember the chariot? BSGK also won the AL Nationals prelims.
