This 1965 photo of Jack Mulligan shows yet another BSGK innovation: the under-the-nose chin strap. The insighful BSGK uniform experts concluded that there wasn't enough plastic strapping to circumnavigate the chins of many Golden Knights. The adjustment to below-the-nose contributed to a revolutionary sound in the baritone section (...but alas, not the same can be said for the mellophones in subsequent years, owing to the difference in timbre and range of the instruments and the demands of the final chords of "El Cid" circa 1968...).
